Principal Investigator: Ali Nazemi
Ali grew up in Mianeh, Iran, and obtained his B.Sc. in Chemistry from K. N. Toosi University of Technology (Iran) in 2005. Then, he moved to Canada and completed his M.Sc. in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Toronto with Prof. Datong Song (2009) and his Ph.D. at The University of Western Ontario with Prof. Elizabeth R. Gillies (2013). After his graduate studies, Ali first spent two years (2014−2016) in England as a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Prof. Ian Manners at the University of Bristol and then came back to Canada at Queen’s University (2016−2017) to work with Prof. Cathleen M. Crudden as a postdoctoral fellow. In January 2018, Ali started his independent career as an assistant professor at Université du Québec à Montréal. His group focuses on design, synthesis, and self- assembly of novel polymeric and dendritic systems to fabricate nanomaterials for applications in nanomedicine and in catalysis.

Marilyne Bélanger-Bouliga – PhD candidate (2020 – present)
Marilyne grew up in the countryside of Québec. She moved to Montreal at the age of 16 to pursue a 3-year technical degree in analytical chemistry at Cégep Ahuntsic. In 2017, she decided to enroll in the chemistry program at UQAM. During her second semester, she joined Prof. Nazemi’s group as the first member ever! 3 years have passed during which Marilyne has conducted research while completing her BSc. She is now a full-time MSc student in the Nazemi group. Her research mainly focuses on the development of metal-containing polymers and their corresponding nanoparticles.

Nesrine Khitas – PhD candidate (2021 – present)
Nesrine obtained her PhD in polymer materials at the University of Sétif in Algeria. Then she moved to Canada to pursue another PhD in chemistry. Her research within prof Ali Nazemi’s group focuses on the development of hydrophobic, superhydrophobic and self-cleaning coatings for solar panels. When not in the lab, Nesrine enjoys cooking and discovering the city.

Lucas Paris – PhD candidate (2025 – present)
Lucas pursued his studies mainly focused on organometallic chemistry and organic synthesis in Dijon, France. After an internship in Barcelona that increased his interest about nanomaterials and their applications, he wanted to move in the research group of Pr. Nazemi to continue as a PhD student in this field. He’s interested about lot of things including soccer, especially Real Madrid, airplanes, arts. Despite being a bad cook, he likes to discover new food.

Thomas Jacquemin – PhD candidate (2025- present)
Thomas spent most of his childhood in Vannes (Brittanny, France). He then moved to Rennes (Brittanny, France) at 17 to earn a bachelor’s and a master’s degree at Université de Rennes. As a part of its curriculum, he completed three internships in organic and organometallic chemistry: two at the Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes (Rennes, France) — first under Prof. Assoc. E. Kirillov, then under Prof. L. Norel— and one at the Technische Universität Chemnitz (Chemnitz, Germany), supervised by Prof. J. Teichert. Eager to explore new horizons, he relocated to Montreal at 23 to pursue a PhD in the field of organic and polymer chemistry with Prof. Ali Nazemi. His research mainly focused on the development of self-healable and degradable polymer, based on polyurea incorporating a phosphorus–nitrogen 3D inorganic cage. When he isn’t in the lab, he either works out at the gym or treats himself to a good meal at a local restaurant.

Noémie Wilson-Faubert – MSc candidate (2023 – present)
Noémie is living on the north shore of Montreal and obtained her BSc in chemistry at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). After working in research in metallurgy, she discovered a big interest in the field of polymers and nanomaterials and in 2023, she joined Pr. Nazemi research group to work on self-healable and degradable polymers. Noémie likes to play sports, travelling, she loves nature and open-air activities but mostly spending time with her loved ones.

Olivier Ross – MSc candidate (2025 – present)
Olivier, the youngest of a family of 4, lives on the South Shore of Montreal and obtained his college diploma (DEC) in Natural Sciences at Cégep Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu to pursue his BSc. in chemistry at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) during which he discovered his interest in polymers and nanomaterials. It was in the third year of his BSc. that he began his research internship with the Nazemi research group on degradable and self-healing polymers. In 2025, after completing his BSc., Olivier started his MSc. on nanomaterials for the development of reusable gold nanoparticle catalysts. Also, Olivier enjoys playing video games, listening to music and doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Yasmine Rassi – BSc summer intern (2025)
Yasmine is a second year, earning her bachelor’s degree in chemistry here at the University of Québec à Montréal. She is a recent graduate from the technical program of Analytical Chemistry from Ahuntsic College in Montréal, Canada. She joined the Nazemi Group after taking Professor Nazemi’s class during the winter semester of 2025. Because she enjoyed his class so much, she now participates in the study of degradable and self-healing polymers with Thomas. When Yasmine isnt in the lab, she either spends time with family and cats or is reading a good book.
